Why has hero status for Indonesia’s Soeharto caused outrage?

Indonesia’s government has bestowed ‘national hero’ status on former president Soeharto. The award caused uproar amongst critics who say Soeharto’s legacy is one of mass murder, even genocide. They accuse the government of whitewashing a violent regime. Soraya Lennie explains.
