Air-strike fallout near Yemen’s capital

A blast at a missile base outside of Sanaa destroyed cars and injured people inside their homes.

A recent air strike against the Scud missile base at Faj Attan outside of the Yemeni capital Sanaa reverberated into the surrounding neighbourhood, leaving a trail of damage.

The explosion injured people inside their homes, while cars in queues at petrol stations, about 4km away from the base, were completely destroyed.

The base is under the control of pro-Houthi Yemeni army units. It has been targeted several times by air strikes since the start of the Saudi-led bombing campaign, which has attempted to halt the expansion of the Houthi rebels throughout the country.

Buildings that were relatively far from the targeted base were damaged in the blast.

Fragments believed to be from ammunition stored in the Faj Attan base landed in a neighbourhood several kilometres away.
An unexploded rocket ended up near the base.
Shrapnel landed some 4km away from the targeted base and hit several cars that were queuing at a petrol station. Luckily, the owner of this car was not hurt.
People gathered to inspect a car, which was destroyed while parked in a queue at a petrol station near the base.
A road in a neighbourhood near the base was damaged as a result of the air strike.

This car was also damaged in the blast.
A number of people in the surrounding area suffered injuries in the blast.
People carried injured civilians into a local hospital.
Some families were forced to leave their homes in the aftermath of the blast.
Those whose homes were damaged sought shelter elsewhere. Many homes near the base sustained severe damage.
